Preventive

Preventive dentistry means a healthy smile, and for children, requires regular visits to a pediatric dentist as well as parental involvement with daily oral care at home. We serve the communities of Atascadero, Paso Robles, Templeton, and San Luis Obispo; and hope to see you soon for a visit.

Preventive dental care for children can include any or all of the following:

  • Proper dietary habits
  • Brushing and flossing
  • Regular check-ups
  • Assessment of risk for cavities
  • Evaluation of oral growth & development
  • Oral health education
  • Protection against injuries
  • Management of oral habits
  • Guidance of erupting teeth
  • Sealants

Why is preventive dentistry important?

Dental problems can interfere with eating and prevent adequate nutritional intake, and can have a negative effect on speech, self-esteem, learning, and daily activities. Severe decay can also affect growth and development. A commitment to preventive dentistry can result in less extensive (and less expensive) treatment for your child.

When should preventive dentistry start?

Daily cleaning of the teeth should begin as soon as the first tooth erupts. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that your child visit your pediatric dentists shortly after the first tooth erupts and no later than 12 months of age. The earlier the dental visit, the better the chance of preventing dental disease and problems.

What role do parents play in prevention?

After completing a thorough oral examination and assessing your child’s risk for developing cavities, your pediatric dentist will design a personalized preventive program of home care for your child. This program will include brushing and flossing instructions, diet counseling and, if necessary, fluoride recommendations. By following these directions, you can help ensure your child’s good oral health.

How do pediatric dentists help prevent dental problems?

Preventive dentistry involves much more than simply brushing and flossing. Your pediatric dentist can apply sealants to protect your child’s teeth from decay, help you select a mouth guard to prevent sports injuries, and provide early diagnosis of and care for dental and orthodontic problems.
